What is the General Medical Council?

The General Medical Council is a non-governmental organisation which regulates doctors in the UK. It monitors the conduct of doctors and can take action against those who breach the rules or who abuse their position of trust. The council first comes into play when a doctor applies for registration with it. Once he or she has been accepted, they become a member of the council and will have to abide by its rules.

Before you can work in the medical field, you will need to get a license from the medical council. The license is only issued to doctors who are registered to practise. Once your license is issued, you will have to prove that you are medically qualified. In most cases, the council will demand that you take part in regular examinations which will help the council to determine if you are medically qualified or not. If you fail any of these examinations, you will need to pay a fine. Doctors should also have Medical Indemnity Insurance. Find out more about this at a site like MPRS, providers of Medical Indemnity Insurance.

It is the watchdog of doctors that looks after the welfare of its members. If you think that you are facing a case that is similar to one that the council has taken up, then it would be wise to seek the help of the council. You will need to make sure that you comply with all the rules laid down by the council. This is because you could lose your professional license if you are found guilty of any of the offences that have been charged against you.
