Ireland’s first language is Irish (Gaelic). It is a compulsory subject in all schools, and it, along with English and Maths, must be learned all the way to high school. The European Union recognises Irish as an official language and a special badge is worn by many Irish speakers letting people know that they speak the language.

The Titanic, perhaps the world’s most famous ship, was constructed in Belfast, Northern Ireland’s Harland and Wolff shipyard. In 1912, the luxury liner sank, killing nearly 1,500 people. The tragic tale has become so well-known that a tourist attraction dedicated to the ship has opened in Belfast and it generates an incredible number of visitors from all over the world each year.

Traditional Irish music is well-known around the world and it encompasses everything from folk music and traditional Uilleann Pipes through to big popo bands.  Irish music is popular in a variety of genres, and the country has had a lot of success at the Eurovision Song Contest.
