Why do the Irish give gifts on Saint Patrick’s Day?

One of the major reasons for the festival is a celebration of St. Patrick. His conversion of the country to Christianity brought about many changes in Ireland and the people took to the new religion very enthusiastically. For them, the feast of All Saints’ Day was introduced and since then there have been several feasts celebrated on that day. Today St Patrick’s Day is considered as one of the most joyous festivals in the Irish calendar, where people go out for celebrations and family get-togethers. It is also widely celebrated around the Globe by those that can trace an Irish ancestry but also those who can’t.

In fact it is probably better to say that rather than celebrate the Saint it is actually more of a celebration of the Irish diaspora and that countries peoples contribution to those countries in the New world. South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Canada all received their sons and daughters from the emerald islands as they fled persecution, famine and poverty.
